hydroponics is quite simple really. generally u have a resivoir below the level of ur table (or buckets).. being lower allows water to drain down since it cant go up..
u generally have a pump that pumps water into ur table or buckets, and a drain (generally a tube that sticks a couple inches above the bottom of ur try to allow water to fill a little ways)...
water will go down this tube (pump continueing to pump water) when the water level reaches that high (basically is a levy, allowing water to get 3inches deep, then running over flow down tube).. the pump shuts off (on a timer) and water will drain back down the pump and its tube to ur resivoir..
its all pretty simple.. just remember that water will drain back through ur submersiable pump.

so essentially all it is is an automated watering system?

personally i think hydro isn't very automated, with potential for so many things to go wrong... Also since you're supplying the plant's nutrients you have to pay very close attention to what you're doing :p

actually hala ur completly wrong.
hydro is automated.. the only thing that i have to do is drain my rez every 7 days, and re-fill it with water and nutes.. To check the nutes i use a pH/PPM pen (more technology) and just drop it into the water and read the numbers and make sure they its not too high. then i can leave for another 7 days if i want to..
Hydro is very simple (at least ebb n flow systems)... iv helped 65yr old men set up this system, and watch them pull it off flawlessly the very first time.. (over 4pounds with 2 4x8 tables with a total of 4 600's
