LED's versus HPS lights

Postby lightstalker » Tue Sep 29, 2009 4:13 pm

I am about to reopen an indoor garden after many years off. Because I am basically starting from scratch, all over again, I'm tantalized by several technological upgrades and thinking about changing my approach.
My biggest problem was that, and will be again, I am operating within a VERY small space (15 inches X 30 inches X six feet tall). With much trial and error, I was able to get a 250 watt HPS light up and running years ago, but climate control was a huge problem. While I know I could replicate this set up again, I'm enticed by LED technology. Clearly, it would solve many of my biggest problems, but I've also been warned that, despite all the hype, LED's just aren't as good.
Thanks in advance for your opinions/help.

LED technology isnt up to par yet for the growing world.
working with such a small space as u have, i would suggest dividing ur 6ft tall cabinet into 2 3ft tall spaces. the flowering on bottom, and the veg on top, and run compact floros in both. i would say approx 5 floros per shelf.
now u would need to flower ur plants as soon as they root almost, or at least by 6inches tall.

led's

I have read a lot about these led setups. The best I can deduce is that watt for watt, the led set up wins. They use so many lights that more usable light can so to put it, be programmed in. The biggest down side right now is the cost. When the cost falls in line with the hps and such, everyone will probably go to them. Most have limited space and heat problems with the big lights. Being old fashioned, will probably stick with the big lights. And dirt.

Fist off I just want to say thanks for having a place to learn! I have been growing in hydro for the last year and have had five good harvest. I used to think that it was going to be to hard to grow in hydroponics but it was really easy. I now have more space and am trying new lighting technology. I have a 1200 watt Super spectrum LED light I made that has only a 9 degree temper change. I also only installed a 4 inch fan that has a flange to adapt to a 4 inch dryer duct. I made mine for just under $400!
