ya id go with jackels advice for another grower on here -carefully place a black garbage bag over him and then gently chop it down. it doesn’t look like its that far along but the clustering w/o any hairs is def male.

Thanks. Took it down this morning. Not having a 16 foot garbage bag :) I just sawed it down and gently moved it away. None of the pollen sacks were open.

Growing this season has been interesting and a lot of fun. My harvest won't be anything near what I'd hoped since I've lost both Northern Lights (this one that turned out male and one that simply did not prosper) and one big Afghan I though was female. I'm down now to two nice afghans and one guerilla swag plant.

Just the same that's more than I'd have had if I hadn't planted.

Question: These NL's were expensive "feminized" seed from a reputable grower. Does anyone have an idea how often so-called feminized seed grows up male?

Well I don't think I'll use them again either. That's one of the things I've learned from growing this season.

Some other observations include:

(1) I may stay away from "award winning" genotypes or exotic hybrids. It's probably premature, based on one small crop, but I have this sense that some of the strains that are closer to their natural genetics may be more vigorous and less susceptible to disease. The decided winners in my garden are the big bushy "afghan" types that the grower sent as "bonus" seeds. The northern Lights Feminized (that I paid a pretty penny for) bombed completely.

(2) Size matters! And where you're growing may limit your choices of what to grow. I'm gonna pay a lot more attention to height next time. Growing outdoors on my own property means that plants that reach 15 feet at maturity are ridiculous. If I lived in a normal neighborhood I'd have had to cut them off before they were half grown.

(3) These babies need room. I have the spacing for corn, beans okra and tomatoes down pretty well. But I had no idea that my pot plants were going to need 6 - 7 feet between them. All of my plants had areas of reduced vegetation due to crowding from their neighbors. May have to enlarge my plot next year.

(4) I love the idea of growing my own weed! Watching my beauties bloom makes the idea of paying $450 for an ounce of something that is so easy to cultivate seem crazy. And it bothers me sometimes that when I purchase I may be supporting some violent cartel-types in Mexico.

I appreciate you guys helpfulness. Thanks. I'll put up some more pics at harvest.

Yeah, thanks for asking.

The little schwag guerilla plant that popped up outside my back fence matured early. It yielded 6 oz of sticky skunky very narcotic pot. On a still night you could smell that little mother 10 feet away.:) What a nice bonus! Especially considering the disappointments with some of my "big name" genotypes. All I did was water it when it hadn't rained in two weeks and fertilize it about half as much as my garden plants. (Which is interesting, because I think I over-ferted my Northern Lights and may have even shocked that one beau-ti-ful specimen into going male or heavily herm...too much K when I was expecting flowering to start.) Anyway, it was a fine little plant. Here's its harvest.

Image

The plant I'm calling A1 is looking great. It's had no health problems, spent much of the veg season noticeably smaller than the other indica then added height late in the season, up to about 7 feet. It's pretty well budded (probably not as heavily as your beautiful plants, jackel), has a great aroma and is really loading up with tricomes. I plan to harvest in 7 days. Here's a shot of an upper cola.

And here's a closer shot.

A2 I'd pretty well written off as a loser. (Like A1 it was a "bonus" seed that came with my NL's.) It got big (8ft high x 7ft wide) but its buds were so skimpy...just very small buds and they didn't extend very far down the branch. But in the last 7 - 10 days it's really started to add mass in the buds. So, I'm encouraged and am gonna watch it closely to delay harvest as long as I can (without suffering too much THD degradation) to get the most out of it.

Here's a pic:

Image

I started out with six plants and wound up with three. Lost two when they bloomed male and one got big and just died off...never knew why. I had dreams of 5 pounds :) which would last me, what, a year?

I took some chances growing on my own property but always determined that I would not sell any of it. If I got busted for growing I wanted to be able to say, "It was all for my personal use," with great conviction. Unlike you CA growers, dealing here can get you seriously arrested. Lots of people do it, of course, but I'm a successful middle aged businessman - a model citizen :) - so there's no financial motive for me. I say that after realizing that my guerilla plant was worth $2400 on the local market if sold in 1 oz lots.

Anyway, it looks like I'll wind up with somewhere just short of a pound and a half. I'm not gonna squawk about that.

This was my first grow, but I didn't have the kind of problems that I read about some of the folks here. I expect that's because I'm a life-long gardener with a lot of experience cultivating flowering plants. On the other hand I think I may have cost myself at least one, and maybe 2, really nice plants to male blooming by fertilizing my 420 at the same rate as my corn and tomatoes. But those heavy veggies flourish with absurd amounts of nutrients, especially in my sandy, well-draining soil.

I hung the plant I harvested on a line stretched across my kitchen. What fun! Everything I own smells like pot! :) A young female friend has been helping me with the garden this summer (she's interested in horticulture) and it was mildly erotic to watch her close her eyes, hug herself and go "MMM" when she'd walk in and inhale. ;)

It's supposed to be rainy here all week, so I'm gonna be watching for mold. But I don't think we have as much of a problem here as you do in heavily agricultural regions where there are so many more mold varieties wafting on the breeze.

Thanks to you and the other admins here for holding my hand :). It's always great to be able to turn to an expert when venturing into unfamiliar territory.

Jackel, I've been admiring your crop photos. Let me know what yield weight you get from those, will ya?

if u can, i would let those plants go another 2 weeks. they will fatten up much more.
will defn let people know my numbers. i know they wont be as high as i have had in the past as i cut my plant numbers down a lot for safety. but if i average 2 pounds per plant ill be happy.

Discoloration of leaves and slow growth

Postby newbees » Tue Feb 23, 2010 6:56 am

We are brand new to this. We found some nice seeds and thought we would do some research then give it a go. We are about 4-5 weeks into it and noticed the two bottom leaves are getting tan colored patches. Could this be from overwatering and leaving water droplets on the leaves? Or is it because of lack of nutrients? We have 4 other plants and none of them are displaying this. All seeds germinated within a week of eachother. Also does it look like they are the right height and growth rate for 4-5 weeks? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

I have also planted mine.. they will be transition in mid august more then likely, i harvested some purps late september last year. if they dont next month then august you should start to see buds, they should harvest October sometimes -harvest often ranges from September to November soo its really when the plant start transitioning and then how long that phenotype takes to fully mature.
